2012 International John McGahern Seminar
Thursday, 24  – Saturday, 25 May
Registration 5.00 pm at the Bush Hotel followed at Opening & Welcome (7.00 pm).  The seminar is organised by NUI Galway and Leitrim County Council to commemorate the work and literary achievements of John McGahern, one of Ireland’s best known and respected modern writers. Contributors over the three days will include eminent writers, critics and academics including renowned US based author and recipient of the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, Yiyun Li. The keynote address – McGahern and the Historian – will be delivered by Prof. Diarmaid Ferriter. As well as appealing to all lovers of McGahern’s own work, the International Seminar will be of interest to literary researchers and to book clubs and readers of contemporary fiction and modern writing. Tuesday March 27th 2012: An Taoiseach, Mr Enda Kenny TD, announced the inclusion of Irish Country Hotels (a co-operative of 27 privately owned and managed family hotels) as the latest member Hotels of Guaranteed Irish at an event in Buswells Hotel in Dublin. The group, which includes the Bush Hotel in Carrick on Shannon (the first in Leitrim) are the first hotels to be given the Guaranteed Irish logo, Ireland’s most trusted and recognised symbol for Irish manufactured goods and services.

In a time of much uncertainty regarding financial matters, last Sunday’s Convention began on an upbeat note with Joe Dolan, MD of The Bush Hotel confirming that the hotel will continue its sponsorship of the Leitrim team for 2012. Road Safety
As part of a recent Road Safety program, people around the county were invited to experience what it’s like to be involved in a car accident. For a number of days in October, a driving simulator and roll-over simulator were featured in the car park of the Bush Hotel in Carrick on Shannon. The event was organized by the Road Safety Authority and Leitrim County Council to raise awareness about the importance of driving safely, possible driving issues and what happens in a collision situation. Carrick on Shannon Garda Superintendent Noel Carolan expressed his admiration for the foresight of local officials in bringing the simulator to the town.
