Carrick-on-Shannon & District Historical Society
Carrick-on-Shannon & District Historical Society are hosting lecture on Wednesday Feb 15th in the Bush Hotel @ 8.30.
Dr Marc Caball will give a talk on Bishop William Bedell(1571-1642) of Kilmore, Print Language and Religion in the seventeenth century. Bedell was responsible for the translation of the Holy Bible into the Irish language!

Carrick Rowing Club
The Bush Hotel wishes Carrick Rowing Club great success as they host the annual Head of the Shannon 2012 on the 18th February.  As the event is a huge undertaking, they would be delighted to hear from anyone that would like to volunteer to help out on the day or just to come down and spectate as crews from all around the country take to the Shannon.  They also hope to run some art, colouring and photography competitions in the run up to the event and also on the day to let people get involved.

Fairtrade Fortnight Event
The local Fairtrade committee held an awareness event in the Market Yard Centre last week. There was an extensive display of Fairtrade products which may be purchased locally. On Thursday morning, 8^th March at 9.30, in The Dock (2 mins walk from the Bush Hotel), there will be a guest speaker, Sigfredo Benitez, the manager of Cooperative Los Pinos, a coffee co-operative in El Salvador. This will give an insight into how purchasing Fairtrade goods supports the livelihoods of others in less well off places in the world. All welcome and Fairtrade tea, coffee and biscuits will available in The Jury Room. Fairtrade Fortnight runs until March 11th.

Book Signing
Gerry Duffy (the man who ran 32 marathons in 32 consecutive days), author of Who Dares Runs will be at the The Reading Room Bookshop (2 min walk from the Bush Hotel) to read, talk, sign books etc… on Friday, 9th March.

2012 International John McGahern Seminar
Registration 5.00 pm at the Bush Hotel followed at Opening & Welcome (7.00 pm). The annual International John McGahern Seminar held in Leitrim moves this year to the earlier dates of Thursday 24th to Saturday 26th May. The seminar is organised by NUI Galway and Leitrim County Council to commemorate the work and literary achievements of John McGahern, one of Ireland’s best known and respected modern writers. Contributors over the three days will include eminent writers, critics and academics including renowned US based author and recipient of the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, Yiyun Li. The keynote address – McGahern and the Historian – will be delivered by Prof. Diarmaid Ferriter. As well as appealing to all lovers of McGahern’s own work, the International Seminar will be of interest to literary researchers and to book clubs and readers of contemporary fiction and modern writing.
