Anthony Trollope Summer School
6-8 September
Anthony Trollope is universally recognised as one of the great Victorian novelists, however when he arrived in Drumsna in 1843 he was in the middle of an unpromising career in the postal service. It was during his stay in the village that he embarked on a walk that was to change his life and literary history.
To quote President Mary Mc Aleese “something happened to his soul here” and he fabricated the plot of his first novel, the McDermots of Ballycloran. The novel (although fiction) was based on well known local characters and mentions many places that are still in this area today. Anthony went on to write more than 47 books including the Barchester Chronicles and rise to the top of his profession as a senior civil servant. He is also credited as having introduced the pillar box to Britain and Ireland.
The Anthony Trollope International Summer School, held every two years is a fitting and enlightening tribute to the novelist and includes lectures, discussions, a banquet and more.
This year the opening ceremony will be performed by the Chairperson of Leitrim County Council with a reception and registration on Friday 6th September in Drumsna village.
Saturday morning starts with registration followed by workshops in the Bush Hotel, Carrick on Shannon. This year we are delighted to have three fantastic speakers: Mary Kenny, Yvonne Siddle and Haruno Watanabe with the sessions chaired by Michael Williamson.
Lunch will be served in the Bush with a Trollope themed menu! The afternoon continues with discussions and chat about Trollope’s book ‘An Eye for an Eye’.
That night, the Trollope banquet takes place in The Bush Hotel with after dinner guest speaker, Howard Gregg.
The weekend finishes on Sunday with a walk along the beautiful Trollope trail and on to Ballycloran.
Now we are not promising that Drumsna works this magic on everyone who visits or stays here, but we don’t rule it out either …
