Leitrim’s population is estimated at 25,799. Source (SCO – 2002). Carrick is the administrative centre of Co. Leitrim and, with a population of c. 4,500 residing on both sides of the River, has experienced a population growth in excess of 19% since the last census. A bustling town, Carrick-on-Shannon is now one of the most popular and fastest growing inland resorts in Ireland. It is situated on the shores of the majestic River Shannon and is both the county town of Leitrim and the cruising capital of the Shannon. The town offers a broad choice of all weather attractions and activities to cater for all tastes.
 
With 750km of cruising available the town is ideally situated at the gateway to both the River Shannon to the south and the Shannon-Erne Waterway to the north. A range of river related activities are availale. Pleasure cruisers available for day trips are on offer for those who are not taking a cruising holiday. Carrick is also widely acknowledged as an Anglers paradise and within a 10km radius of the town there are no fewer than 41 lakes. The town has one of the oldest rowing clubs and longest established Regattas in Ireland. A calendar of festival and entertainment special events is available.
 
Carrick has renowned attractive streetscapes, traditional shop fronts, quaint antique shops, bustling marinas with riverside walks and parks. For shopping, the town centre has many specialist, interesting and boutique style shops whilst all the major brand names are to be found at the shopping centres to the north and south of the town.
